RG Carter are only steps away from completing a brand-new extension purpose-built to welcome 50 additional special needs students at Highfield Littleport Academy. The project funded by Cambridgeshire County Council reinforces its commitment to providing inclusive education across the county.
The new facility features adaptive classrooms, a state of the art sensory room, and cutting-edge learning tools designed to support a wide range of educational needs. But it’s not just bricks and mortar that make this expansion special — it’s the vision behind it.
To mark the occasion before half term, students embarked on a creative journey into the future by designing and burying a time capsule filled with their predictions, dreams, and ideas for what school life might look like in the year 2045. From robot teachers to eco-friendly campuses and universal inclusion, their contributions were both imaginative and deeply thoughtful.
Headteacher Yvonne Skillern praised the students’ creativity:
“Their ideas were brilliant — from solar-powered school buses to holographic teachers. It’s clear they’re not just thinking about technology, but about kindness, independence, and what it means to belong. Our school learning values in a nutshell! This project shows how powerfully our students can shape the future.”
The students helped bury the capsule in what will be the school’s new wildflower meadow, where it will remain sealed until 2045. The ceremony was attended by staff, students and representatives from RG Carter. This celebrates both the physical growth of the school and the visionary spirit of its learners.
This extension is more than just a building — it’s a launchpad for futures imagined by the very students it serves.
